Successful recent Freiburg delegation Civic Visit of Guildford: Sept. 10-11, 2016

Freiburg’s Oberbürgermeister (Dr. Dieter Salomon), Bürgermeister (Ulrich von Kirchbach), their wives and seven city councillors and the head and a member of the International Affairs Department were in Guildford over the weekend of 10-11 September.

The visit received several mentions elsewhere, like this one on the Guildford Dragon website, as well as the Twitter feed of the Guildford Mayor.

Their visit coincided with Heritage Open Days at Guildford, and the Freiburgers were able to visit several of the sites including a vineyard and gin distillery in addition to some of the more historic ones.

At the University, they were greeted by the new Vice-Chancellor (Prof. Max Lu) before touring several departments. Several members of the Association’s Committee accompanied the group on their various visits.

It was a highly successful occasion and certainly strengthened the already strong partnership between our two towns.

GFA participation in (pre-Brexit referendum) BBC Radio programme

Guildford, Freiburg, the GFA and Freiburg's Anglo-German Club were all mentioned (and a number of local individuals interviewed) in a BBC Radio 4 "The World Tonight - Referendum Views from Twinned Towns" programme which was broadcast starting at 10:00 pm UK time on March 17, 2016.

Here are clickable links to 2 separate related pieces on the BBC News web-site:

Also, you can listen to a recording of the full March 17 Radio 4 programme itself via the BBC iPlayer, here - this link should remain available until at least 18 March 2017.

(Note: the previously available option of downloading an (MP3 format) audio file recording of the broadcast is no longer on offer from the BBC. Apologies therefore for the fact that this link was previously shown here but no longer worked.)

  • the relevant material only starts a few minutes into the programme, so you need to be a little patient; and
  • the programme also features some inputs from Berlin, including an interview with Hans-Olaf Henkel.
