Dr Alex Leveringhaus of University of Surrey will explain the vision for peace of German philosopher Immanuel Kant, look at some overlaps - and tensions - with British philosophy,  and explore the current geopolitical challenges facing the UK, Germany and Europe.

Stay on afterwards for a drink!

Alex Leveringhaus lectures in Political Theory, at the University of Surrey. In his research, he is particularly interested in ethical issues arising from armed conflict. His distinguished CV includes writing a monograph on the use of AI in weapons systems, and serving as an expert consultant to the International Committee of the Red Cross Geneva and to the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary, and Arbitrary Executions.

Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher and one of the central Enlightenment thinkers. Born in Königsberg in 1724, Kant's comprehensive and systematic works in epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, and aesthetics have made him one of the most influential and controversial figures in modern Western philosophy.  He has been called "the father of modern ethics", "the father of modern aesthetics" and "the father of modern philosophy".
