Dr Hughes explores aspects of film, focusing on 3 of the films set for A-level modern languages,while providing insights and ways of thinking about film relevant to foreign language cinema in general, or indeed to films in general.
2019/20
Topic: "Unlock the world through languages (Or: How to Boost Your A-Level Skills, And Where They Can Take You!)"
Led by: Dr Ben Schofield, Head of German, King's College, London
Venue: George Abbot School, Guildford
Dr Schofield gave support and tips to enable students to get the most out of their A-levels, with real-life case studies of the careers of people who studied modern languages and practical ways to boost one's skills and results.
2018/19
Topic: “Introduction to European Film”
Led by: Professor Phil Powrie, Professor of Cinema Studies, University of Surrey
Venue: the 2016 Hall, at Guildford High School, London Road, Guildford GU1 1SJ
Professor Powrie was aware of which films sixth-formers study at A-level, and included as many as possible in his illustrated talk.
